WIC Health Care Provider Resources

Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) in Nebraska

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, known as WIC, is a nutrition program for pregnant, breastfeeding women and families with children younger than 5. In Nebraska, WIC helps approximately 36,000 people at over 90 clinic sites.

Since 1974, WIC has safeguarded the health and nutrition of women, infants, and children as the nation's premiere "food as medicine" program. WIC's primary goal is to provide supplemental nutrition.

WIC foods are nutrient-dense to provide the healthiest start in life for women, infants, and children.

What does WIC provide?

  • A monthly nutritious supplemental food package
  • Breastfeeding support and peer counseling
  • Nutrition and health education
  • Referrals to healthcare and community resources like blood-lead testing and vaccinations.

WIC Health Care Providers

Health Care Providers can play a pivotal role in ensuring families have access to nutrition and services provided by WIC, including health screening, nutrition education, nutrient rich foods, breastfeeding support and referrals to other health and social services.
